LIBRARY MATTERS

COM MITT EE ’S RE PORT. The Library Committee reported as follows at last night’s meeting of the Whangarei Borough. Council: — We have to report that the work of the library is being carried on satisfactorily. The income from subscriptions, etc., for July was £3(5 10s lid, and the average daily circulation was 28!) as compared with 202 in -Tidy, 1028, the. slight decrease being probably due to a long spell of cold wet weather, and the Earthquake Relief efforts and other matters engaging public attention. Your committee is considering a scheme for a new library, which will be submitted for your consideration. Your committee placed on record its sincere appreciation of tlhe services rendered by Mr Rust. Your committee recommends the council to thank the following donors: —Dr. T. A. Black, Kamo Road, Whangarei, The Evolution of Man (Ernst Haekel); Director of Agricultural College, Canterbury, Prospectus of Canterbury Agricultural College; The Mayor of Hastings, Official Handbook of Hastings; The 1 ‘ Order of the Star, ’ ’ Ghristcdinrch, Life in Freedom (J. Krishnamurti); The Mair Family, per Mr R. C. M. Harington, First Impressions of England and Its People (Hugh Miller); Steam and Its Uses (Dionysius Lardner); and .a 'Collection, of Maori curios and relics of early days, including a picture of Rewi M'aniapoto; Mr J. Brake, three framed photographs of views of Otira Gorge and River; Mr Shilton, per Or. L. J. Brake, part of revolver belonging to Ned Kelly, brought from Melbourne in. 1879, one Maori axe.

Ur. A. T. Brainsby referred to the number of gifts to the library and museum which was very pleasing. In connection with the scheme for a new library, he stated that the committee had hoped to be further forward than it was, but he could only announce that the committee had been investigating suitable sites etc., and would

have two schemes at least to lay before the next meeting of the council. The report was adopted.
