IDLE CROWN LANDS
AN INTRICATE PROBLEM. GOVERNMENT ACTION URGED. (Special to “Northern Advocate.’’) AUCKLAND, This Day. Farmers in sparsely settled districts are feeling the burden placed upon them by idle Crown laads. As
a preliminary step to some, measure of relief the Auckland Farmers ’ Fnion, in conference, today decided
hat the Government be. urged to make a thorough investigation of all Crown lands with a view to opening areas for settlement, and thereby increasing production.
Some difference of opinion was revealed in debate. It was considered that land settle,in e-nit under present conditions of fanning would be courting failure. Tho idle kinds, however, were a heavy burden on land under cultivation. The matter was one of the outstanding problems of the day. Mr It. K, Ha trick (Waimate North) said there were It wo classes of idle lands in the Bay of Islands. There were great blocks of ironstone country, and some settlers were farming it with moderate, success. The Government. should take advantage of Ihrir experience. The great fault of, New Zealand settlement schemes was that the oxneri; nee of local men was being ignored. Several remits im connection with | the subject were arranged. ,
