.Amazing abuses of the Dole System are revealed in the Ccssnock district, on information gathered by Mr Weaver, Minister of Mines during his visit to the coalfields. This has convinced him of the need for stricter supervision of the distribution of unemployed relief.
Mr Weaver quoted some remarkable cases. One was of a former employee of one of the closed mines, who from the Family Endowment Federation Eolief Fund and other kindred sources, was drawing a total unearned income of £2l fortnightly.
A second case was of a man, recently returned to Australia, after two years’ trip round tho world at, his own expense, who wont to the coalfields and placed himself on a dole. Many heads of families were with drawing deposits from banks, hiding the money and then marching to u police station and demanding relief.
