OBITUARY

MR DAVID HIGGINS. Mr David Higgins, reported to have been 104 years old, died at Whakata lie Hospital on Friday He went to that district from W-hangarei about five years ago, and had been an inmate of the hospital for a long time. Deceased was unmarried, and is reported to be a Crimean and Maori War veteran. He has two nephews at Wollongong, Australia. MR W. P. TYSON. The death occurred at the Whangarei District Hospital on. -Saturday morning of Mr William Preston Tyson. Deceased, who was born at Elterwater, in the Lake District of Westmoreland was descended from old English yeoman 'stock, his mother being one of the Prestons who have held “Millbrow” farm estate for nearly 400 years. His father was related to the notable “Jimmy” Tyson, the Australian cattle king. The late Mr Tyson, who was a buyer in the London. Wool Exchange, arrived in New Zealand 28 years ago and became interested in the timber industry, iu which he remained until his health broke down four years ago. Last November Mr Tyson was appointed clerk to the Kamo Town Board, but recently suffered k relapse, from which he did not recover. His widow survives him. The interment took place at Tvetonikau Cemetery yesterday.

The passing away of Major Ariell removes another of the bonds ■which link the district today with its inter* csting pioneer history. A son of the. late Mr W, W. Ariell, he was born in London, and educated at the. Forest Hill school. He came to Paparoa shortly after his parents in 1872, setling on land near the Upper Pahi River. Associated with his father on. the same farm, he proved an industrious and successful settler. In. several, public mat tar s he was prominent, notably as district Coroner for ,?1 years. For three years he represented the Phparoa Riding on. the Otamatea; County Council. In Defence matters' ho was keenly interested and in the clays of volunteering he Was sergeantmajor in the old Otahmtea .Mounted, Rifles. During the Great War, though' over 60 years of age, lie journeyed to Europe and took service in the Queen’s Royal West Surrey (Labour Battalion), receiving the rank of major from, the Imperial War Council. During the : conflict he was gassed, and has since suffered from chronic bronchitis. In Masonic circles Major Ariel! was! well known, being one of the Charter; members of Franklin Lodge, Paparoa. ! Heart trouble, added to the bronchial ! affection resulting from the (War, hastened his end. 'However, though sub-: jeet to intermittent attacks of sick-/ ness, he was, during recent years, .fre—quently about and active, and had i several good days immediately prior to his death. The funeral took place at St Mark’s Anglican Cemetery, Pa.paroa, on Wed'nesday, many residents gathering to, pay the last tribute to one who has been identified with the district life for over half a. century. The impressive service was conducted by the Rev. B. M. I. iSalt, M.A. Many beautiful floral wreaths wore sent in token of regard. Prior to the interment a service was held at the Masonic Hall, and, following the at the cemetery, the burial rites of the Order were observed, this service being also conducted by the Ecv Salt.

He had been ailing for a long period, HR E. A. HARNEY. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, May IS. The death is announced of Mr E. A. Harney, K.C., Liberal member of Parliament for Smith Shields. He was an ex-Senator of the Australian Cotnmonwealth Parliament.

Mr E. A. Harney was born in Dublin. Hi* was called to the Irish Bar in 1892 and five years later was called to the Australian Bar. He was Senator of the Commonwealth Parliament from 1901 to 1904, after which he was called to the English Bar and took silk in 1920, entering the House of Commons in 1922.
