DEFAULTING HUSBANDS
PAINFUL PENALTIES. SUGGESTED AT CONFERENCE. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) PALMERSTON N., Thursday. "We should catch some of these roosters and wring their necks,” said a delegate at the Hospital Boards’ conference’ discussing defaulting husbands and the burden of relief pay on boards. The delegate put forward a remit urging the Government to defray t'hc cost of returning such husbands to the [Dominion, compelling them to support their legal dependants. Mr Petheriek (Wellington); "What are you going to do with the men when you get them? They could defy the authorities. ’ ’ The chairman, Mr Wallace, said it had been a matter of complaint on several occasions, but when such husbands were brought back they might become burdens, too. It had boon suggested to him flint they should be horsewhipped ami released, but he did not know what effect that threat would have if carried out. The remit was carried.
