UTTER DEMOLITION
DAYTONA BEACH CRASH CAUSE CANNOT BE FOUND, .WIFE’S TRAGIC DESPAIR. (Australian Press Association.), (Received 5.35 ii.m.) NEW YORK, March 14. The American Automobile Association lias issued the following statement pertaining to the tragic end of Lee Bible in the motor speed record attempt:—
‘ ‘ The Contest Board regrets greatly the accident. It has no statement to make as to the possible cause. The Triplex driver was driving quite steadily past the official .stand through the measured mile, and what happened occurred so quickly, and the cat was so completely demolished, that no investigation could possibly determine the real cause of the crash. We take it as part of development work in the design of automobiles. It is inevitable that such accidents will occasionally happen. The owner of the, Triiplex racer, Mr J. M. White, stated tonight: “It winds up my racing career, I have absolutely no further ambitions.’’ It appears that Airs Bible witnessed the accident, and she shrieked hysterically when brought to the spot whore the body lav.
Special police were called out t<j, keep the scene clear. News of the. accident brought thousands of spectators.
Lee Bible had made an earlier attempt to break Major 11, O. D. Segrave’s new record. On Tuesday he made two runs in wind and slight rain and averaged about 380 miles an hour. The Triplex was the ear in which the American, Ray Keeeh, made the record that Scgravo beat. Keeeh’s record was 207.155 miles an hour. The visibility became too poor for Lee ,Bible to continue the attempt. Thousands of people wore waiting to see the proposed run. Mr White, owner of the Triplex, had boasted that there was more speed in the machine than anyone had been able to get out of it The result of the attempt to-re : cover the record would depend entirely on the law of gravity. To boat the record, Lee Bible would have had to travel at more than ?31 miles an hour. The daring submarine feat of Charles Traub, who was cut in two when the Triplex struck the sand dune upon, which, he was. standing, took place about three weeks ago, not a few years ago, as stated in yesterday’s cable message.
