WOMAN'S PECULIAR ACT,

(Per Press Association. —Copyright.)

HAWERA, This Day,

Apparently falling in front of a fast moving train, Gladys Ethel Evans, a young married woman residing with her husband, W. K. Evans, at Hawera, was killed instantly on the Turuturu Road level railway crossing, half a mile from Hawera Station, about ten o’clocteHhis morning. The train was a mixed goods and passenger, travelling south from. New Plymouth to Hawera. When about a quarter of a mile from the crossing the fireman and driver saw a woman standing alone at the side of the crossing. The whistle was sounded. It appeared that the woman was waiting for the train to pass .As the train approached she commenced to move along the cattle stop and steadied herself with a. hand on the guard rail, but just as the engine reached the cattle stop she appeared to fall across the rail directly beneath the cow-catcher. The body was practically cut to pieces, the upper portion being mutilated almost beyond recognition. Identification was established through a receipt found and the clothing.
