KENT ROAD LIGHT
Application was made to the Whangar'ei Borough Council last evening by residents of the portion of Kent Road, leading to the High School Hostel, to have a street light installed in the vicinity. Mr W. A. Carruth, chairman of the Board of Governors of the High School, waited upon the local body in connection with the request and explained that the light was needed near the hostel, which was a long.way from the nearest light at the end of the road. Further, it was at present a nasty corner for traffic and many motorists and residents found that not having a light there was a great inconvenience.
The Mayor, Air L. J. Brake, declared that, as there was a hostel there, it would have been a pleasure to him to assist, but the matter had been considered before by the council and at that time it had been felt that compliance was not justified in comparison with the needs of other parts. The council had then recommended that the board should provide the light in return for receipt of electricity at a flat rate. Had it been a night school instead of a hostel, the position might have been different. He moved that the council write declining the request and adhering to its previous proposition. Cr E. G. W, Tibbits seconded and expressed the view that the council could not go back upon the recommendations previously made by the electrical engineer and the eommitfee which had investigated the matter. The motion was carried and Air Carruth then intimated that ho could not recall receipt of any information regarding previous decisions by the council.
