LARGER LIBRARY
PROBLEM FOR. COUNCIL
DEMAND CREATES NECESSITY,
“Owing to the congestion under which the work of the Library is being carried on, your committee strongly urges the necessity of provision being, made for a new Library, or for the enlargement of the present one.”
The above was am important item of the report of the Library Committee to the Whangarci Borough Council last evening. The report further stated that use of tlie library during April disclosed a daily circulation of 300 volumes, ah increase of 47 over the corresponding month last year, while the income was £4O 19s sd, an increase of £6 11s over that of April, 1927. As chairman, Cr. A. T. Brainshy explained that the need for more accommodation arose from the increased use that was being made of the Library. He mentioned that the daily exchange had.risen to 300 books. There was a great deal of work jn handing these hooks in and out, while there also was repairing to be done, provision of more shelves, and of a larger selection of books. The work entailed had grown out of eight compared with some years ago. He moved that the time had arrived when the council should consider the problem and recommendations.
The Mayor, Mr L. J. Brake, concurred that the subject should be discussed, but intimated that it should be after the council had visited the Library and ascertained the position. His Worship realised that the conditions under which the Library staff was working at present were not creditable to the council. Or. Bralnsby’s motion was carried.
