TWO-EDGED SWORD

SUPPRESSIVE POWERS

PERIODS OF EMERGENCY,

COMMUNISM WORST DANGER

(Australian Press Association.) (Received 12.40 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day,

Mr William Hughes, resuming the debate on the amending Arbitration Bill, giving the Federal Government wide powers in times of unrest, described the provision regarding strikes and lockouts •as the most dangerous piece of legislation conceivable.

It was a sort of two-edged weapon, which would drive unionists into one big union to safeguard themselves against industrial civil war. The At-torney-General must see that he could not imprison thousands of men who defied the Government.

The great danger today "was Communism deliberately working on tho malleable class of society for the destruction of civilisation. They were equally the enemies of industrial unions. The Government should set up machinery to deal with ink like Garden as a surgeon dealt with

cancer. Mr Hughes supported the Bill gen erally. The debate Avas adjourned.
