DISHONEST SECRETARY
AWARDED TWO YEARS’ GAOL,
(Special to ”Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day.
The pica, by Mr G. P. Finlay, for probation on behalf of Leonard Christian Harton, formerly secretary of the Te Kuiti Racing Club, was unavailing -when Harton appeared before Air Justice Reed today for sentence on a jehargp of thefts of the club’s funds totalling £232 19s 6d. j
Counsel said there were extenuating circumstances. Harton was attracted to Te Kuiti at a time when a spirit of great vitality and progress was in evidence (1910 or 1911). Accused was an accountant and did well at first, but when the slump came he found himself in flnancial difficulties and his health broke down. Drink was partly the cause of his downfall.
Pointing out that the defalcations had extended over a period of two years, his Honour said it was not a case in which probation could be granted. In addition to the Racing Club thefts there were misappropriations of rent £9O 7s (id. A sentence of two years’, reformative treatment was imposed.
