Officer of the Navy, informed the . House Naval Affairs Committee that . an increase of approximately 20,000 enllisted men and 825 officers will be necessary to man the eight cruisers now under construction and the 25 cruisers contemplated in the five-years programme. He said that the eight cruisers now under construction will cost approximately 10,500,000 dollars each. —A. and N.Z. - —-) AIRCRAFT FIGURES. LARGELY AMPLIFIED. (Received 12.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 30. Admiral Moffatt has revised his previous figures. He told the Naval Committee that 1490 new aeroplanes, costing over 88,000,000 dollars with maintenance, would be necessary for the now aircraft carriers and cruisers. He declared that these revised figures were made necessary by replacements required in the next few years. Many obsolete planes would go out of service shortly. The new aeroplanes ♦would be built in seven years, beginning in 1930, and would necessitate a total of 2930 aviation officers and personnel.—A. and N.Z.
