SWEPT BY FIRE

HUNDRED ACRES OF PASTURE

SETTLER'S HEAVY LOSS.

CAUSED BY SPARK FROM ENGINE.

How a heavy loss can be the outcome of a small beginning was exemplified on Saturday afternoon, wheiji a spark from the engine of }jhe southbound express set fire to a paddock belonging to Mr R. McCarroll, at Marcretu.

Owing to the country being as dry as the proverbial bone, the flames spread with 'alarming swiftness, and it was not long before 100 acres of pasture land was laid waste, not a semblance of grass being left. Mr McCarroll, who has been milking 30 cows, will be a heavy loser as he has been forced to turn his cattle out in the bush.

Speaking to a representative of the ‘Northern Advocate” this morning he said; “It’s good-bye factory cheques for mq for the remainder of this season; but I would like to know if there is any chance of the Department making good the loss?”
