MANGANESE POINT REGATTA

SAILING AND LAUNCHING.

CONTESTS FOR CUPS,

Although, in the early part of the morning there was very li'ttlo sailing wind* conditions improved later on for the' annual regatta organised by the Whangarei Cruising Club and off Manganese Point. Really it was an ideal day for a holiday by the seaside or on the water and the many privately ‘owned launches and yachts considerably augmented the large number of patrons who made the trip in the Eva and Rakanm. All thoroughly enjoyed the outing, especially as the usual attractions of the popular picnic ground had the added interest of the sailing and launch races. All the events were over a course of four miles, and the variation in times provides an interesting indication of the effect of varying tide and wind, not only upon sailing races," but upon the speed of launches.

Five boats started in the launch race for the Ailsa Craig Cup, and Florence (J. Reynolds) won from Whati (W. Reynolds) in 26m 575. Kopuru (F. Reynolds) was third. Lbloma (R. Laurie) and DawiV (E. Parker) also competed.

The second race of the season’s .series for the Palmer Cup for the popular under proved a good one. The Ranger was sailed by N. Hollows and M. Robinson, the crew which won two races in the Cornwell Cup series, and they sailed the boat very well, their handling of the spinnaker being particularly smart. They covering the course in Ih 15m, easily boating Scout (W. Pullman), Snipe (A. Lacey), All Black (H. Hemphill) and Whizz Bang (R. Nixey). The win gives Ranger seven points for the cup, but Scout leads by one. Snipe is third with two points. Sadie was sailed by H. Pickmere and won the race for mullet ..boats from Eona (R. Baker) and Royal Saxon (S. Charlesworth), the corrected time showing that the finish' w r as a close one. The sailing time was 42m 20s.

There was a good finish in the championship race for 14-footers, Snipe (A. Lacey) winning by 2 seconds, in 49min ssec, from Ranger (N. Hollow's), with Scout (W, Pullman) only a bowsprit’s length away. They wore the onlv starters.

Loloma (R. Laurie) won the Big Tree Cup race for launches. She was 18sec a way from Dawn (E. Parker), the second boat being 45sec ahead of Whati (W. Reynolds). Kopuru (F. Reynolds) also competed.
