DUTY ON WHEAT

NOTICE TO BE GIVEN,

ASHBURTON, This Day,

Hon. 0. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, arrived here yesterday at the invitation of the mid-Canter-bury -executive of the Farmer*’ Union and A. and P. Association to inspect the wheat growing areas of the country.

In the morning the Minister inspected the experimental farm, and in the afternoon he addressed a large meeting of farmers on the wheat question. His speech was much on the lines of the Premier’s recent statements at Timam and Christchurch, but he added that notice of intention to impose a duty would be given to Australia within a day or two.

Referring to dairy produce, Mr Hawkeu defended control. The Minister will tour the country today, returning to Wellington this evening.
