So far no damage to any part of the North Auckland railway has been reported, but some anxiety was felt at Hikurangi lest one of the coal mines should bo flooded to any extent. The Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine is not affected.

“Almost human” characterises the work of sheep dogs when competing at trials, and an opportunity of witnessing these sagacious animals in -operation will oe afforded Whangarei rml district residents tomorrow and Friday, at Mr D. J. Finis yson’s paddock, at Kamo, when the annual trials of the Whangarei County Sheep Dog Trials Club will be held. The location is within easy distance of Whangarei and those who have Thursday after noon as the half-holiday should journey to the scene and enjoy an educative outing. At Port Nelson the other day a fox terrier had a few minutes ’ sport that will doubtless remain one of his cherished memories for the rest of his life (says the “Mail”). A young dolphin which had apparently been injured in the nose ran ashore. A man picked the fish up, brought it round to the main wharf and dropped it into the wafer again. It did not dive, but remained swimming on the surface, and a fox terrier leaped into the water in hot pursuit. The dog’s efforts-to climb on to the porpoise’s back were very amusing. He could gain no foothold on the slippery surface.

Interest in the forthcoming municipal elections in Whangarei is increasing and there is a good deal of speculation regarding who will aetually go to the poll. It is understood that there will be five members of the Council who will not stand again, and that the four who will probably seek re-election are Crs. Tibbits, Brainsby, Rust and Meikle. Amongst those who have boon approached, but have declined nomination, are Messrs L. W. Nelson, J. S. Dent, E. G. Hosking and R. IT. Harrison. Mr J. E. Henderson has stated that he will stand, and Mr S. J. Bothell’s name has been mentioned. Cr. A. D. Jack i,s a likely candidate for election to the Whangarei Harbour Board, and Cr. F. Higginson for the Hospital Board.
