A FIREMAN’S DEATH
MOTORIST’S CALLOUSNESS,

j Comment on the lack of a protectjive railing along the seaward side of (the esplanade at Kohimarama was made yesterday by Mr F. K. Hunt, coroner, at the conclusion of an inquest, regarding the death of Henry j Alfred James Noon (22), a member of (the Remuera Fire Brigade, who died lin Auckland Hospital on December 31 jas the result of a fall from a motorj cycle at Kohimarama two days previously. Mr Hunt said he thought the attention of the Tamaki Road Board should be drawn to the matter and that the Board should consider the ad- ? v.isahility of erecting a protective j railing. j William Walter Edgerley, a schoolj master, said that shortly after S p.m. (on December 29 he was sitting on the esplanade at Kohimarama when a mo-jjor-car with extremely dazzling headjjights came towards him. A motorcycle ridden by the deceased came to--1 ward the ear, keeping far over to his i own side, evidently to avoid the glare, j The cycle struck the ferro-concrete Lkorbing of the esplanade close to the 1 stone roadway leading down to the j beach, and deceased was hurled down ' jon to the roadway.' The accident happened immediately beneath an electric ] lifrht standard, but the light was not] burning at the time. The motorist, j who was travelling in the opposite di- ' vection to the deaceased, did not stop, [although he must have seen something was wrong. His callousness was dis- } graceful. ; After other evidence, the coroner j returned a verdict of accidental death.
