All ,the sacks of oysters picked so far this season from the beds in Whagarei Harbour have been bought upon arrival at the Town Wharf. As an extra picker has been engaged, it is hoped that the supply next week-end will be about 40 sacks.

Prevalence of unemployment in Auckland has led to a number of men walking from tho city to Whangarci in search of work. Unfortunately the employment available locally is not sufficient to reward them for their efforts.

As an expression "of their very high regard for the late Mr H. Ferguson, whose many fine qualities had endeared him to all with whom he came into association during his long life as a settler in Tutukaka, the residents of Matapouri. Ngunguru and Tutukaka recently combined in the procuration of a choice artificial wreath, encased in glass, which has been deposited on the deceased gentleman’s last resting-place in the Kete? nikau Cemetery, Kamo.

An enjoyable programme of music was furnished by the Whangarci Municipal Silver Band at tho Kensington corner yesterday afternoon. .. Theitems, which were greatly appreciated included “Uncle Sammy,” “The Voice of tho Guns,” and “Death and Glory” marches. Visitors to the Whangarci Winter Show who saw the alligator which was one of the features of the side entertainments; will regret to learn that the huge reptile breathed its last at Palmerston North last week. The colder climes of the South apparently proved too much for the alligator which, when prodded with a stick, the usual means resorted to, to arouse him from his coustomary state of inertia, failed to respond. He passed away at a venerable age, having been born in Florida, North America, a hundred years ago.

An elderly man Aexandcr Mellis, who apparently walked to Whangarci from Auckland and was subsequently soon about the streets asking for money, was charged at tho Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs E. The accused leaded guilty, and when questioned said that he had no work in view. A fine of £lO was imposed, the alternative being one month’s imprisonment.

Tho danger which threatens football spectators who stand too near tho touch lino where there is no protecting barrier was again exemplified last Saturday when, as was the ease on tho previous Saturday, it was a lady who suffered. During the game Mangakahia v. Hikurangi, played on No 2 ground at Kensington, a Mangakahia player “booted” the ball to tho touch line. It gathered considerable impetus in its flight and struck a lady supporter, luckily without injuring her in any way. Accidents of this sort will occur, and it behoves spectators, especially 1 ladies, to see to it that they view football from a safe vantage point.
