CAVE CANEM!
In Britain every dog is entitled to a first bite. In France the dog has not this prerogative, and a recent case has shown that a watchdog in pursuance of its duty of watching has no right to bite an intruder. The intruders in thi& case wore three—a municipal councillor, a policeman, and a tax collector. The owner of the dog wos out —perhaps purposely so, for he had not paid his taxes, and it was to exhort him to perform this distasteful duty that the procession of three entered his home “without knocking or ringing.’’ Now the dog was an intelligent animal, and selected the taxcollector for his attentions. The municipal councillor and the policeman discreetly retired while the dog inflicted physical and sartorial injuries on the tax collector. The tax collector wont to law, demanding compensation. He was unsuccessful, but on appeal the Court above awarded him 300 francs damages on the ground that the procrastinating taxpayer was keep-, ing on his premises a savage animal. “It is, regrettable that a dog which so discriminately performed its duty should incur such censure,’’ comments the Edinburgh “Weekly Scotsman.’’
