ATTEMPT TO KILL
WITH ARSON INVOLVED. CHARGES AGAINST HALF-CASTE. PALMERSTON N., This Day. The hearing was continued at the Police Court of the sensational Awahuri case, in which Ernest TaniwhaSutherland, a half-caste, was charged with attempting to; kill his wife, Rangina.ua Sutherland, on the night of February 10; with wilfully setting fire to the dwelling house, of his father-in-law, Richard Drummond; and with assaulting his mother-in-law;, Ngaere Dnimmond, causing her actual bodily harm.
Richard Drummond said .that on being awakened he went outside and found sacks and old clothes burning under the house. On pulling them out, Sutherland struck witness with a. garden hoc. Later, the wife of witness appeared with bk'od streaming from her face. Sutherland also pointed something at witness and threatened to shoot him. Witness chased the accused, who disappeared finally. All this time the house was steadily burning, and soon was razed to the ground. The police gave evidence that accused admitted placing burning sacks under the building, but denied that he intended to do any harm. Accused pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence.
On the additional charges of assault and arson the accused was committed for trial. —Press Assn.
