POULTRY RAISING
j LECTURES BY EXPERTS. i There was only a moderate attendance at the Friendly Societies’ Hall last evening on the occasion of a lecture on poultry raising and egg production by the Government experts, Messrs. J. Brown and E. C. Jarrett, of the Department of Agriculture. Mr. W. U. Timewell presided and accorded the lecturers a hearty welcome. Mr. Brown, who was the first speaker, emphasised the need for organisation among the poultry breeders in
j the Dominion. He was pleased to | know that North Auckland had its j own egg circle, but apart from local marketing generally it was essential that breeders should organise if they were to meet with suecssful marketing abroad. There was sufficient egg pulp in store in the Dominion to meet all requirements for the present season, and it would not be long before export to England would be an accomplished fact. When this came about it would be imperative to see that the middleman or speculator did not creep in, as it was a well known, fact that the producer today was not getting anything near the price fhat eggs were being retailed at. Another question that organised effort should tackle was that of the price of wheat. Today the poultryman was paying more for fowl and inferior wheat than the price of the best milling. Referring again to export, the speaker stated that New Zealand was favourably situated so far as this was concerned, because its heavy summer production could be placed on the English market when it was winter at Home and eggs were fetching high prices. The speaker then went on to the questions of the selction of birds and breeding types. j
Mr. Jarrett confined his remarks principally to the housing of birds and the right manner of feeding.
At the conclusion of their addresses the speakers were heartily applaud-
After a number of questions had been asked and answered Messrs. Brown and Jarrett were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
