CELERY DISEASE IN ENGLAND

DIFFICULT TO COMBAT. The chairman of the British Chamber of Horticulture recently drew attention to the fact that there was at the present time an epidemic of Septoria Apii in celery. The only thing to do is to cut off the diseased plant and burn it. The disease, he said, is brought over in the seed. The Ministry of Agriculture is investigating the matter. Mr. Cobley said that some years ago he found it advantageous to soak the seeds in hydrogen peroxide. , Mr. Roebuck said that this was only the first season. The Ministry was getting research done now, and the results would be available for the next season. The crops are fully grown when the trouble arises; that is why it is so difficult to do anything.
