JUDGES’ REMARKS,

JERSEYS The judge of the Jersey section, Mr. W. J. Hall, of Matatoki, stated that the aged cows were extremely good. Worry and Noble’s Fernleaf were fit to show anywhere. The two-year-old heifers exhibited by Mr. A. E. Phillips, Maunu, were very commendable, j In the bull section the champion, | Kuku Major, was well constitutioned and had a great depth of body, but lacked character ia the head. The reserve champion was of extra quality and wonderful breed characteristics. This animal ran the champion very close, the only thing being that he was lacking in condition. The grades were surprisingly good and there was very j little separating the three placed pens. I On the whole, if the asociation man- I aged to induce the breeders of cattle j to come from a distance, there was not [ the slightest doubt that it would de- j velop into a high-class show. The inexperience of some owners in leading their cattle round the ring lost them points. This was especially noticeable among the bulls. The Jerseys were quite a nice section and would do credit to any show.

FRIESIANS.

i The bulls were said to be of good class, the first and second in the j throe-year-olds, the champion and the reserve champion were equal to those to be found anywhere in the Auckland province. The two-year-olds were not quite so good, but the yearlings were a reputable class. The four and

three-year-old cows shown wore as good as any seen in the last Auckland Show, and for cattle first taken off the paddock were in commendable order. The two-year-old “heifers were a nice class and the yearling heifers were worth while. On the whole the cattle wore very good, and he was surprised to see them looking so well at this time of the year. Many of them would have made a creditable appearance at the Royal Show. HORSES. Mr. L. W. Nelson, of Whangarei, who judged the horses, said that there was a very creditable display among the “tops,” but as at most country shows the quality of the “bottoms” was indifferent. The well known performers, Mr. Willis’ Lady Muriel and Mr. J. Sloane’s Yum Yum, were outstanding in the hack classes. An attractive looking cob, owned by Mr. G. King, of Ohaeawni, was sure to be heard of later on. The prospects in! future,, regarding the quality of the light horse exhibits were not very promising, if one could judge from the lack of calibre observant in the maiden hack class. There was only a mediocre showing of medium draughts, which was to be depleted, as this type of horse was very requisite to the farmer in the North. FRUIT. Regarding the fruit, Mr. T. W. Baker, of Rawene, said that, taking the recent inclement weather into consideration, the general showing was praiseworthy. It was quite up to standard, but generally there was a sparsity of exhibits in the many classes. Peaches and apples predominated, and of the latter the Gravenstein variety was well represented. Stone fruit generally had suffered severely from the recent bad ■weather. There were few Northern Spy apples, but this kind was fast being superseded by what was known as the Salome. The following are the details of the awards, etc:— HORSES (Judge: Mr L. W. Nelson, Whangarei) DRAUGHT HORSES. Medium Draught, mare or gelding, 4 years and over —Kauri Timber Company 1, W.
