HIKURANGI TOPICS

SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. The annual picnic under tlie auspices of the Methodist Sunday School took place on Friday last, perfect weather accompanying the function, which was highly gratifying to all the children concerned, who had a “real .good time.” BOWLING. Although four teams from Hikurangi were engaged in competition at the Whangarei Bowling Club's tourney, week-end bowling was by no means neglected, arid the green presented an animated scene. Several friendly games and a few more championship matches were played. The folio-wing is this .week's summary of the positions in the 1 respective competitions:— CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. | A Section.

PERSONAL. Miss D. O’Callaghan, of the clerical staff of the Hikurangi Dairy Company, left on Monday to spend her annual vacation of two weeks with friends in Auckland. Mrs. R. Hardie, of King Street, left on Monday for a holiday extending over a month and contemplates visiting friends at Taneatua, Huntly and Auckland. Miss J. Martin, of Huntly, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. James, of View Road, for the past fortnight, loft •by the express on Monday for her home. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Merrington and family, who have been on an extended i holiday at Russell, returned during the ;. latter portion of last week. | Miss Marion Phillips, of the Hiku- j rangi school teaching staff, returned from Russell on Saturday after spending an enjoyable vacation of six weeks. Miss F. Leighton, of George Street, who has been on a fortnight’s visit to her sister, Mrs. J. L. Plant, of Devonport, Auckland, is expected to return tomorrow. Miss V. Snowden will probably return tomorrow from a fortnight’s visit! to friends at Cambridge. i Miss Giwen Gager, of Heorge Street, j after spending two weeks with friends at Helonsv.illc, returned last Saturday.

TENNIS. Interest in lawn tennis since the holidays is showing signs of revival, as a result of most players returning from their holidays. It is on the cards that the club's various' competitions will definitely continue during the forthcoming week-end.' The club contemplates running, in addition to the present contests, a men's doubles competition, and there is no doubt that the suggestion will meet with popular approval from players. The club is possessed of only three courts and- the membership numbers over 50, of- whom the major portion arc enthusiastic players, the result being that the courts are invariably ' fully occupied. One of the rules of the club to eliminate the difficulty arising out of such a strong membership of active players is to limit play to one set at a time, the object being to give beginners together with experienced players equal opportunities with regard to receiving ample practice. It has come under the notice of the writer that a number of old players during the recent evenings have disregarded the club's ruling bearing upon the limitation of one set at a time by playing three vantage sets during the presence of players eagerly awaiting their turn. This practice it is regrettable to state, is not in- accord with the spirit of the club, as beginners are entitled to their share of the club’s privileges and should be encouraged instead of being unnecessarily debarred from participating in a reasonable share of practice games. VESTRY MEETING. At a special vestry meeting of the Anglican Church Vestry, held during the week to deal with tenders for the renovation of the Parish Hall, it was decided to accept the offer of Messrs. Hellens Bros., the work to be commenced hs speedily as possible. CHORAL SOCIETY. There is a movement afoot in Hikurangi to start a mixed choral society, and the proposal is receiving support 1 from a large number of interested per-. Isons. To further the movement a meeting will take place in the Methodist Church at an early date. METHODIST “NOVELTY SOCIAL.’’ A “novelty social’’ was held in the j Hikurangi Methodist Church on Januj ary 28 and whs. a great success. The novelties comprised needle-threading and placing words, the first being -won by Mrs. Trimble, the trophy being a smart flower vase; the second by Mrs. Jackson (a lady’s purse). Mr. A, Pratt won the prize for trimming hats, and Mr. Hewett -won the prize for making paper dresses. Other novelty contests W'ere won by children. The judges were Mesdames Foreshaw and Turnbull. The big event of the evening was Mrs. Turnbull's Jazz Band, which was well applauded. A few vocal solos were sung and the whole occasion w r as eminently pleasing and satisfactory.
