NO JOY TRIPS

TEEASUEY AND PUBLIC SEEVANTS. There has been a considerable flutter through various Government departments lately, following on receipt of a circular from the Treasury requiring a monthly return to be sumbitted up till i the end of May, showing the names of i officers who visited Dunedin, stating their business there and the length of their stay. It is assumed that the circular has been issued for the purpose of discouraging officers from making too many “official” trips to Dunedin during the Exhibition period, but at the same time it has been responsible for a consider- £ able degree of resentment. One officer £ today characterised it as “ childish. ” 3 and contended that it was a reflection c on the heads of departments, as it in- \ ferred they did not exercise sufficient -4 control over their subordinates. 2 !
