EUCHRE.

The three-weekly series of the euchre tourney held under the auspices of the Anglican Church was continued in the Parish. Hall on Tuesday night. The attendance was slightly lower than usual, but by no means marred the success of the evening. Altogether 17 games were played and the proceedings were carried out without a single hitch.

The ladies' prize, consisting of two pieces of glassware donated to the tourney by Mr J". Tomason, was won by Mrs L, Trotter with 11 games, after cutting off with Mrs R. Hardie, who also finished with eleven games to her credit. In the men's section, Mr J. Brown figured as the prize-winner with twelve end a half games and was presented with a safety razor donated by Mr C. B. Gager.

Immediately following the tourney the ladies? committee dispensed a dewhich was the concluding phase of a very pleasant ingSNOOKER CONTESTS. , On Wednesday night, August 26, a team of 17 snooker players from Hikurdngi will journey to Whangarei to try conclusions with the Whangarei exponents of the game. Recently on two occasions the Hikurangi team has suffered defeat at the hands of WlhangaTei, once at home and once away. Much ihterest is centred on the match and on this occasion the local selector, Mr H. Jackson, lias chosen a strong team and anticipations run high for

an even contest. There is a movement afoot with regard to* running an annual series of matches between the two centres for a challenge cup or a shield, the season's ; highest aggregate score deciding the winners of the trophy. ADDITIONAL STREET LAMP,

The Town Board has had erected, on the site of the recently destroyed soldiers' war memorial stone, an effective street lamp which wall prove a boon to travelling vehicles, especially on dark' nights, as the light illuminates the entrance to both sides of the bridge over the Maungawhero stream ,in King Street. The lamp is of a triangular shape, is supported by a stout pole about eight feet in height and casts such a brilliant light that its presence can b£ detected at quite a considerable distance from the town. CROQUET LAWN. The lawn recently laid down for the newly formed Hikurangi Croquet Club is almost completed the only remaining factor being, the building of a pavilion. During the past week a new fence was erected round the green and a suitable approach made to the gate. With the croquet season commencing in September the club will undoubtedly have a green to be proud of.

AMERICAN FLEET ATTRACTIONS

With the arrival of the American Fleet in Auckland quite a number of the residents of the town contemplate vipiting the city next week, and during the present week quite a number undertook the titip.

TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. During the week builders have been engaged on the extension of the telephone section of the Hikurangi post office. Owing to there being a large waiting list of subscribers to the telephone exchange the Postal Department has found it necessary to inciease the capacity to cope with the immediate demand before admitting any further namies to the list of subscribers. The scheme involves an additional switchboard and the extension of the exchange room. The work is now well advanced and will be completed during the course of next week.

BASKET BALL. A basket ball team representative of the school girls of Hikurangi was to journey to Whangarei on Wednesday to plav n match against the Whangarei school team, but owing to the jnclemeney of the weather the girls had to abandon the trip; likewise the school football team which was to have met the A. team of the Whangarei school, encountered a similar exj>erieiice.

CROQUET DANCE. Last Friday night, in the Criterion Theatre, the Hikurangi Croquet Club held a dance in aid of the club fund 3, which were augumented to the extent of £5 5/-. There was a large attendance and the occasion, throughout presented a happy scene. Mrs Spark (piano) and Mr Sinclair (violin) contributed the dance music, extras being played by Mr C. Hyde, while Mr E. Taylor acted as M.C. At 10.30 o'clock the members of the club dispensed a dainty supper, after which dancing continued until midnight. PERSONAL. Mrs H. Hawkin is spending a few weeks with relatives and friends at Helensville.

Mr and Mrs Hawthorne of Wilsonville left on Monday night by the Manaia to spend a few days in Auckland during the American Fleet visit.

Mr George Fields, official cream tester on the staff of the Hikurangi Dairy Company, ws.s , jadmitecl to the Whangarei Public Hospital last Saturday to undergo an operation.

Mrs McLean, Snr., is on a visit to /relatives and friends in Auckland and expects to return towards the end of the month.

Mr J. Tomason left by Monday night's boat on a short visit to Auckland.

Mr Reynell of Wlaro has moved into his newly completed residence in Union Street.

Mr and Mrs A. R. Merrington and family accompanied by Mass Dariel Ward, left this morning for a week's visit to Auckland.

Mr George , Pratt contemplates building a new residence in Valley Road in the near future.

Miss Marion. Phillips left by the Mnnn.in. on. Wednesday on a few days' visit to her mother at Mount Eden, Auckland.

t. Mrs A. M. G. Ward contemplates spending a fortnight at Russell during the school holidays.

Miss A. Claridge of King: Street left by the express today for Glen. Ed-en, Auckland, on a short visit to her parents.
