CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. DETAILED RATES. (Received 11.45 a.m.) OTTAWA, June 22. . The measure for ratification of the Australian agreement was introduced in tlie House of Commons this morning by Mr. Robb, who stated that the treaty was not as wide as the Government had desired. The present proposals did not involve any increase in the Canadian general tariff which is applicable to Canada, but gave Aus-
tralia special rates for certain imports. Lard, beeswax, eggs, cheese, raisins, dried currants, essential oils, fruit pulp, eucalyptus oil, tomatoes rind other vegetables (canned) are free; fresh meats and canned fruits, half a cent per lb; butter and honey, one eent; talkrw, dried apples and other dried fruits, 10 per cent; canned meats, 15 per cent; pears, quinces, apricots and nectarines, 25 per eent; sugar for refining, 35 to 46$ cents per cwt., according to degree of polarisation. A message from Victoria states that the Hon. E. D. Barrow, Minister of Agriculture in British Columbia, has wired a protest to Ottawa against the proposed reduction in the Canadian butter tariff provided in the Australian treaty. He stated that he feared New Zealand would ask for similar concessions, which might lead to serious loss of trade in the dairy industry in his province.—Reuter.
