RAILWAYS TARIFF
COMPETITION WITH MOTORS. REVISION PROPOSALS. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Railway Board has issued a summary of the proposed revision of tariff. This summary is sufficient to fill two pages of an ordinary newspaper whicTi indicates the magnitude of .the Board's task. The proposals have been sent to Chambers of Commerce so that suggestions may "be made if desired before the tariff operates.
j It is believed that the alterations [ will produce an additional £370,009 | revenue. Passenger fares will be | slightly modified. Holiday excursion ; fares remain much the same as now, , | but a . system .of special excursion, [ fares (single fare- plus 25 per cent.) will be used at suitable times; also one-day excursion rates and family I ti kets, whereby for an equivalent of three ordinary adult fares one or both parentis may travel with any number of their own children under the age of 16 years without further' charge. Suburban fares are _ also subject to considerable alteration. j These fare concessions are expected i to do much to minimise the effect of j motor competition, which it is eon- j sidered can only give cause for concern on short runs up to. say,2s tnifcs. I Timber freight will be raised and | frozen meat must now contribute '■ more to railway revenue.—Press Assn. j
