HAT TRICK

ACHIEVED BY IRONMONGER. LAST THREE WICKETS. ENGLAND COMPILES 500. ♦ (Received 9.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. At the conclusion of play on Saturday in the England—Victoria cricket match the following aggregates were shown: — England, . Ist innings 500 .Victoria, Ist innings (one wicket) 3o The start was delayed for 55 minutes ■owing to light rain. The wicket was good, but the bowlers were tampered "by the greasy ball. Hearne and Whysall resumed, batting •confidently, the former 'hitting more freely than usual. Before lunch, the partnership had added 43 runs in 35 minutes. After lunch both men made elegant strokes. The partnership realised 200 in 202 minutes. Whysall, when at 89, including five fours, was splendidly caught in the slips. The pair had put on 216 runs, .which is a record for the third wicket for England against Victoria. Kilner was splendidly caught at mid-off and Douglas was dismissed by a brilliant catch at silly mid-on. Rayson, the googly bowler, i had. ; iiow talcen three wickets in one over for two runs on a good wicket.

Bryan, the newcomer, drove with confidence and freedom, while Hearne gave a much finer exhibition than on Friday. His placing and timing were excellent, but at no time did he forsake deliberate methods. ■ With the total at 430 Hearne was brilliantly caught in the slips. He Tiad batted for 35G minutes and hit 15 boundaries. His partnership with Bryan produced 69 runs. After tea Tate joined Bryan, wTio reached 50 for 78 minutes' batting. Tate hit vigorously and neatly and made 20 runs in 25 minutes with splendid cover drives. Bryan, went after "hoing at the crease for 92 minutes, giving a good display of driving and hitting six fours. His partnership with Tate added 52 runs in 20 minutes. Light rain was falling for some time and the bowlers were again hampered by the greasy ball. Ironmonger, keeping a good length, created excitement by taking the last three wickets with three balls in succession, performing the hat trick. Victoria commenced with 45 minutes left before drawing of stumps. Light rain was coming down and the light was bad, but the wicket remained good. Both Howell and Tate were in good form with the ball, compelling the batsmen to play cautiously. Mayne was splendidly dismissed by Tyldesley with a One-handed catch in the slips. The attendance numbered 8000 and the receipts totalled £690. Details of the play, are as follows:— ENGLAND. First Innings.
