SHOCKING TRAGEDY
» CROWD MOWN DOWN. EXPLODING CYLINDER'S TOLL. THREE PERSONS KILLED. (Received 11.45 a.m.) PERTH, This Day. As. the result of a fire at a butcher's shop in Coolgarclie, at which many people gathered, an explosion occurred. A heavy iron cylinder, measuring 6ft by Ift, used as a water cooler, shot through the spectators. A man named Griffin was struck on the thigh and the upper portion of his leg badly fractured. Mrs Wheeler had both legs torn off. Slie died later. Her husband, who was standing next to her, also had a leg torn off and died later. A man named Purdy had both legs cut off just below the knee. He has since died. Three other men were maimed and several others were stunned. The cylinder was hurled 150 yards. — A. and N.Z.
