A Black Orpington owned by Mr W. A. Griffiths, of Otaika Road, laid five eggs, and is now one behind the leading bird for the championship. The trio of the same breed entered by Mr J. M. Steedman, of Whangarei, has a lead amongst 47 teams of 15 eggs, while Mr Griffiths' two teams hold fourth and sixth places, followed by another Whangarei owner, Mr A. Harden, in tenth position. Amongst 63 teams of White Leghorns, that of Mr C. V. Stringer, holds twelfth position.
■ Some time ago, when H.M.S. Danae was in Auckland, a female child was born in the Waikato while the father and children were visiting the warship. The newcomer was consequently named Danae, and the father forwai'ded the birth certificate to the commander for endorsement. Instead of that request being complied with the parents received a letter that the certificate had been filed with the ship's papers which, when the ship was placed out of commission, would be pigeonholed in the Admiralty. A beautiful edition of the "Legend of Danae," embossed yrith the coat of arms of the warship, and a pretty gold brooch of the same design were forwarded to the baby together with a letter from the commander and officers.

The first group in tlie Whangarei Cooperative Terminating Building Society "will be responsible for distributinc £5000 of free money per annum to its members, stated tlie chairman of directors at I'hc appropriation meeting last night. The shares were allotted on August 12 last year, and three appropriations of £800 had already been made, and there was now in hand a sum of £200 towards the fourth appropriation. Since August 32 therefore £2060 had accumulated in subscriptions of one shilling. It was wonderful how money pooled in this way accumulated for tlie benefit of the members. Two full groups would mean the distribution of £10,000 annually, and it was the duty of every anember to try to persuade his friends to take shares in the second group, so that it could be started. What was good for the member was good for his friends and each member owed it to his friends to point out to them the advantages of membership in the Society.
