The next outward Australian mail will close at the Whangarei Post Office at 6.45 p.m. on Thursday. The Waiata Society's Male Choir will visit Hikurangi to-night to give a concert. The programme will imlude, in addition to the choir number, items by Mrs A. Dobson, Miss K. Stevens, Mr Cyril Lambert and Mr G-. Tupp.

Gazetted consent to the raising of loans by various local bodies includes the sum of £3800 for provision of a sewer outfall in Whangarei Borough and £700 for forming and metalling the Avoca. roads in Hobson County.

Cash receipts by the Whangarei Harbour Board during the past month totalled £1783 2s '5d as compared with £1574 I.ls 5d for the previous month, being an increase of £20S lis. The certified accounts passed for payment at to-day's meeting represented £350 19s 2d to be met by general fund, and £969 19s chargeable to loan account, making a total of £1320 18s 2d.

"Do you drive a car?" asked Mr Briggs of Constable D'Andrad during a case of alleged dangerous driving heard at the Whangarei Courthouse yesterday. The constable replied that he did a little. "Yes, but a Ford or an ordinary car?" continued counsel. "Silence!" in stentorian tones, whs the next definite sound audible above the general titter amongst those listening to the hearing of the case.

Fine weather favoured the Y.W.C.A. for the special girls' effort bazaar, held in Whangarei on Thursday, and £35 was taken. Some of this money is to bo used in adding a much-needed porch to the Club Room, while a part goes towards Whangarei's quota foi supporting four secretaries in the East. Next week the girls expect to learn more of the British and European Y.W.C.A. work from their National Girls' Work Secretary, Miss Bridgman, who arrives on August 14 for a short visit. To-night the usual Tuesday meeting will commence at 7 o'clock with a sealing wax demonstration, while at 7.45 there will be a social evening, when information will be given by Mrs McKenzie concerning the Work of the Pundita Ramabai Mission and by Miss Laxton about the Missionary Birthday Band.

To-day the planking on the old wooden bridge across the Waiarohia stream in Water Street was stripped off preparatory to removal of the structure to make way for the concrete bridge, the piles for which have been made alongside the site.

The lecture on Robert Burns to be delivered at the Whangarei Y.M.C.A. Hall to-morrow night promises to be very interesting. The lecturer, Mr J. Barr, who is the • chief librarian of Auckland, is a noted Burns scholar, and the lecture will be illustrated by means of a number of Burns' songs.

A practice of those taking part in the preparation of the "Quaker Girl," the opera which the Waiata Society proposes to stage this season, will be held in the Whangarei Presbyterian Hall ?.t 7.30 p.m. 011 Thursday. There is still room for more voices, and the conductor, Mr A. Dobson, hopes to see a large attendance on Thursday.

This morning the president and the secretary of the Whangarei Racing Club interviewed the Railways district traffic manager, the engineer of the Public Works Department and the manager of the Northern Steamship Company, relative to travelling facilities to and from the Whangarei race meeting next' October. The matter is well in hand.

As the 'steps taken in connection with the appeal to the Supreme Court against the adverse decision in the heavy traffic by-law case taken by the Whangarei Borough Council have gone so far, th« Finance and Legal Committee notified the Council last evening that the solicitor had been authorised to proceed with the appeal. The notification failed to attract comment and was received by adoption of the committee report.

The Finance and Legal Committee of the Whangarei Borough Council reported last evening that for the Council to extend the electricity main to the cottages being erected by the Railway Department outside the borough in Morningside district, would be a departure from the Council's policy that all electricity main extensions should be paid for by the persons requiring them, and would involve the Council in trouble with similar exte isions. The report was received.

Letters for consideration bv the Whangarei Borough Council are required to be in the town clerk's hands on the Friday preceding the meetings on Monday to enable them to be included in the agenda. Recently there has been a. growing habit on the part of correspondents of sending in letters late. Last evening Cr. L. J. Brake suggested, supported by Cr. A. D. Jack, that only such letters as the town clerk deemed really urgent should be dealt with, and the result was that several letters were held over until next meeting.

After consideration of complaints concerning the untidiness of the ladies' rest room in James Street, the Works Committee reported to the Whangarei Borough Council last evening that it had no recommendation to make. The Deputy Mayor, Mr W. U. Timewell, however, suggested that a woman caretaker should be engaged. A scale of charges could be made and the room -piade self-supporting, and he considered that the engagement of such a car?taker would be an effective solution of the present difficulty. A motion that the suggestion be convoyed to the Works Committee for consideration was supported by Crs. L. J. Brake and A. 11. Curtis, and was carried.

The Ramabai Mission to the childwidows of India is a well-established institution that has made a strong appeal in New Zealand for some years past. The Whangarei district has assisted the work of the mission, which is trying to improve the lot of the 25 million widows in India, and this week opportunity occurs again to add to the funds of the mission. A bazaar is to be held in the Y.W.C.A. Social Hall to-morrow and on Thursday, from 2 till 5 and 7 till 9 p.m. each Jay, when a great variety of goods from many lands will be on sale. Indian, Oriental and Continental novelties will be specially featured at the sale, and the promoters of the bazaar state that everything is marked at a fair and reasonable price.

For some time past there lias been a movement afoot to have the drainage sewer extended from Maunu Road along Te Mai Road in order that the new Hora Hora Schol building may be connected. The Auckland Education Board had at one stage decided to instal a septic tank rather than pay for most of the cost of the connection, which Mr .T. D. Whitmore, Whangarei borough engineer, estimated at £280. The Borough Council urged the advisability of extension of the drainage sewers in preference to the tank, and the Works Committee agreed to accept a contribution of £100 from the Board towards the cost. Meanwhile, however, the Board had reconsidered the matter and had offered to find £140. The letters crossed in the mails, and consequently the Council last evening decided to approach the Board to at least halve the difference of the £40, and contribute £120 towards the cost of the extension.

Tests of the relative value of Tutukaka shingle and crushed granite from Wfaangarei Heads as material in the manufacture of concreete for the Watei Street .bridge are being carried out under the supervision of Mr J. D. Wihitmore, borough engineer. He reported to the Council last evening that the first quantity of granite used had had a lot of fine stone amongst it and the concrete had consequently taken longer to set.
