CRICKET.
.ENGLISH TOURING TEAM. CALIBRE REVIEWED. (Received 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, August 1. Mr Sydney Pardon says that the selectors have provided the best possible available cricket team on form for Australia. He considers 16 too many. It may give rise to discontent and at least, four will feel like passengers. In Holding the team is 70 per cent superior to the 1020 team. "The problem troubling us," continues Mr Pardon, "is the eight-ball over. Only Freeman and Gibson are experienced in its use. It will be a weird and forbidding thing to Tate and Gilligan." Referring to the bowling he says: " There is probably too great leaning on slow bowling. The team lacks one distinctive medium paeer. Hopes are centred in Gibson, if he is able to regain the puce he lost after his operation for appendicitis." Mr Pardon considers that Kilner will prove as deadly as Rhodes on a sticky Australian wicket and adds: "There is much criticism concerning the inclusion of Douglas, on account of his age, but he has had varied experience in Australia. Much comment on the omission of Fender and How-ell has been aroused. It. is considered that the Marylebone Club has been not unmindful of the unpleasant incidents connected with Fender's cables last tour, while Howell, who is purely n bowler, would have been omitted unless he could have been relied upon to retain his form and take at least four wickets per match." —Run.
DOUGLAS REQUIRES REST. TENDON INFLAMMATION. (Received Noon.) LONDON, August 1. Douglas s is suffering from synovitis of the A«hilles tendon of the right foot. Rest is essential, but ho hopes to get fit before he arrives in Australia. —A. and N.Z.
