SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. At the School Committee meeting held in the school on July 24, there were present:—Messrs K. Mcßeth (in the chair), Cherrie, Stockley, Rutherford, Wilson, S. McTvenzie, Cunnold, Rev. W. H. Holloway and Mr Young (secretary). Letters were received from the secretary of the Education. Board, Auckland, stating that the Department had granted the request that pupils should be exempt from attending the classes at the Whangarei Manual Training School. The Board had resolved, on the recommendation of the Hon. V. H. Reed, to apply for authority to acquire under the Public Schools Act an area of approximately an acre and a. half as an extension of the Hikurangi school site. The committee recommended the acquisition of the whole of Sec 36, containing an area of 4a. 3r. ISp., as an extension of the Hikurangi school site, stating that an acre and a half would not provide sufficient ground for a football field owing to the irregular course I of the creek which ran through it, and the desirability of acquiring the whole of Sec 30, which would give ample j room for playing grounds for the ' future. It was decided to put in concrete • pipes at the side entrance to the school. ! The action of the secretary in Ikiv- ' ing scoria and cinders placed around i the boys' shelter shed and side gate j was approved. j

Donations amounting to £3 9s had been received by the secretary for the purpose of tree-planting and had been expended in the purchase of native trees The secretary was instructed to write Mr William Jackson thanking- him for Hie gift of roses and trees, Mr Belton for time spent in planting trees and Mr Douglas, manager of the Hilcurangi ! Coal Compay, for his gift of a load of ! coal for use at the school. Messrs Mcßeth and Cunnold were ap- 1 pointed to visit the school during the ! coming month. j A vote of condolence was passed to j the headmaster on the occasion of the ' death of his father. )

The chairman welcomed Mr Cherrie as a member of the Committee. Accounts amounting to £5 18s oil were passed for payment.
