! FAREWELL SOCIAL. .A social and dance was held in the Parish Hall, Hikurangi, on July 24, to hid farewell to Mr. Howard Ball, who is being transferred to Auckland. Thevening was arranged by the combined efforts of the Church of England and | the 1.0.0. F. and about 100 people were [ present. i Mr. W. R. Harris, on behalf of r,he Church of England parishioners, in presenting to Mr. Ball a handsome travelling bag and a fountain pen, said that they regretted his departure, for he had been a keen worker, and wished him every success in the future. Mr. B. Hardie, on behalf of the Lodge members, made presentation of -i gold tie pin (Lodge emblem). Mr. Ball suitably responded. Daring the evening songs and recitations were rendered by Mrs. Ball, Miss M. Stobbs, Messrs B. Hardie, J. Smith and W. R. Harris, the accompaniment-? being played by Mrs. T. Burley. A very delectable supper was served.
FOOTBALL. On Wednesday afternoon the Hiku-' rangi schoolboys played the Ilora Hora schoolboys at Kensington and after a strenuous game won by 5 points to ?,. EUCHRE.
At the euchre social held on Tuesday I evening 40 Avere present, the ladies' first prize, a tray cloth and pair pillow shams being won by Mrs Merrington, whilst Mr Barribal won the men's prize. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Town Board office on July 28, when Messrs Shore, Lomas, Rutherford, Cherrio, Merrington, Ward, Young and Gager (secretary) were present. Mr. J. Rutherford was elected to the chair. Messrs Ward and Merrington were elected to the committee. It was decided to write to the Minister of Scenic Reserves pointing out that the town had not received any grants for scenic or recreation ground purposes, and also to inform him of the impossibility of finding £1 for £1 toward scenic reserves.
Messrs Young, Ward, Hawkins, 11cLeod and Gager were elected a comJ mittee to further the planting of a ! shelter belt and trees on the recreation , ground. j PERSONAL. ! Mr. J. Simcoek and Miss F. Simcoek, i of Helensville, are paying a visit to Mr. and Mrs. H. Hawkins. , Mr. and Mrs. H. Pomfrett have returned from Auckland, where a holiday has been spent. Mrs. J. 'Mclntyrv returned from hospital on Wednesday. Miss M. Taylor, of Tikipnnga, U>ft .for Auckland by Thursday morning's train to visit her cousin, Mr. A. Spedding, who is seriously ill at that place.
Attention of Hikurangi and district residents is drawn to the forthcoming concert to be given in Hikurangi on Tuesday next by the Whangarei Waiata Society's Male Choir and other artists. The programme which the Choir rendered in Whangarei recently, and which met with such approbation by the audience, will be given in full. Mr W. Scally, of Whangarei, Violinist, announces that he will be in Hikurangi at the Picture Theatre on Tuesday, August sth, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for the purpose of interviewing pupils, parents and guardians. If sufficient inducement offers Mr Scally will establish a permanent school for the tuition of the violin. 00
