MANSLAUGHTER.
TASMANIAN SENSATION. DOWNp. POUND GUILTY. (Received 9 a.in.) HOB ART, This Day. George Downs, of Scottsdale, who was charged with having murdered his wife on February 16, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. —A. and ■NX.
Mrs Maud Downs was seen to enter her home on Saturday, February 16, and shortly afterwards neighbours heard screams. A silence followed. The husband, George Downs, said that they had quarrelled, and that his wife had left home. Early next day he hired a cart remarking that he was going to look for Mrs Downs. Later a bloodstained rug was found in the vehicle. On February 21 the police found a chaff bag containing portions of tho missing woman's bod\. The postmortem disclosed that the feet and arms had been burned, the remainder of tho body being charred.
