MATRON'S RESIGNATION.
AT BOARD'S REQUEST. PUBLIC TAKES EXCEPTION. THAMES, November 10. A public meeting called by the Mayor in response to an influential deputation to consider the position of the matron's resignation from the hospital was attended by over 400 people last night. The speakers were Mr W. McCullough, Miss Wilcox (High School teacher), the Rev. A. J. Beck (Anglican), the Rev. J. Milne (Presbyterian) and Mr A. Cribb (a member of the County Council). The speakers pointed out that the matron had bee» asked for her resignation by the board, who had understood that with the opening of the maternity annexe it would be necessary for the matron to hold a midwifery certificate. An appeal to the Department revealed that this was unnecessary, but the board refused to reconsider its decision. The meeting was unanimous that the matron (Miss Pollen) must l>e retained, so it was decided to ■send a deputation to the board's meeting on Monday of eight influential people to ask the board to go into the matter again A resolution was passed. —" That this meeting of residents in the Thames Hospital district affirms tha desirableness of retaining the services of the present matron; that a deputation of eight persons selected at the meeting be requested to wait upon the board with*- view to-hrespectfully asking the board to reconsider its determination to dispense with the services of the matron." A delegation of six men and .two ladies were appointed, including the Mayor (Mr T. W. Rhodes) and Mr H. Lowe (chairman of the county). — Press Assn.
