YOUNG HELPERS' LEAGUE.
PICNIC AT OAKLEIGH
The sixth annual picnic in connection with the Young Helpers' League of Dr. Barnado's Homes was held at the residence of Mrs H. Green, lower wharf, Oakleigh, on Saturday, January 12.1 when a large number of people took advantage of the lovely weather and pleasant picnicking grounds to spend an enjoyable day. The Oakleigh contingent was convev6d down the river by boats and launches. There was a good high morning tide, so bathing and boating on the river were popular amusements, and after luncheon a capital al fresco entertainment was provided by the children, the audience voting for what .they considered the best items. Kose and Eugene Draffin gained lirst prize for a duet in character, Betty Crane second for a song with chorus, Marjorie Blake, B. and M. Crane third for an action song, and Kitty Madcien fourth for a song. The newly formed "Oakleigh Habitation" members were ■very active in selling home-made yoft dr:iks and mascots, and a large Christmas tree and prize packets were we'll patronised. Through a misunderstanding many of the young helpers omitted to take their collecting boxes, but those present were opened by Mr Hilary Carter and Mrs Green, secretary, and were found to contain £2 4s sid, Lizzie Salmon's heading the list with lis lOid. The amount taken during the day was £12 3s 2Jd, but as there are still more than half the collecting boxes to come in it is expected that the.total will reach considearbly more. Mr L. Coulthard and Mr Cross earned llie thanks of the young helpers by conveying visitors to and from the picnic.
