"The young ladies of the district, oinder the able captaincy of Miss Madge .'Hayward, organised and carried out vrt-hat proved to be a very successful social on Tuesday. Although the night, was inclined to be wet and overcast, •with heavy clouds presaging the coming storm, a large number of merrymakers \"werc present. A start was made-at eight o'clock with the grand march, Miss Vera Child being at the piano. Misses Lilly Haniiam and Madge Hayward carried out 'the duties of M.C. in a most pleasing manner, while Mrs Hitehens and Mis:* Woolhousre presided at the piano. During the evening solos were sung by Miss Bint and Miss Elsie Bint. A dainty supper was served in the hall annexe. Dancing was kept going until the small hours of Wednesday, when the function * roke up, everyone declaring it to have been one of the most successful held in the district. The proceeds, after expenses have been deducted, are to be handed over to the Maungakaramoa T'ublie Library. WELCOME RAIN Although several of the oats crops vTe not yet harvested, the farmers locally were more pleased than otherwise to see the rain, as the spell of hot dry weather had 'dried up the pastures . considerably. The crops of swedes and iturnips will now go ahead, and thus ensure plenty of roots for the winter. A RESIDENT'S MISFORTUNE Mr A. B. Miller recently cut his knee, ard unfortunately blood-poisoning ensued necessitating his removal to the hospital.
