GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.
HOW KIRKWOOD FARES STILL IN THE RUNNING (Received noon) LiONDON, June 23. The leaders in the first round of the Golf Championship are—Hutchison, 72; Kinch, 73; Massey, Duncan, Hagen and Kerrigan, 74; Herd and Hunter", 75; Kirkwood, Havers and White, 76; Vardon, 77; Mitchell, 78; Ball and Ockenden, 79; Taylor and East, 81. The aggregates for the first two Tounds are—Hutchison, 147; Ray and Barnes (American), 148; Duncan, Herd, Massey and Mac Lean, 149; Kinch, Kirkwood and Havers, 150. Kirkwood is hardly playing with the complete assurance and confidence which characterised his play in Australia. To-day he had a tendency to heel his drives and spare his approaches; nevertheless he is still well in the picture. Though the Australian spectators were somewhat disappointed at Kirkwood's falling away at the last nine holes this afterthis afternoon all agree that he has done marvellously well in bringing "Australia to the front in the golf world. Kirkwood is not worried. He is full of confidence for the last round? for which Gassiat, a Frenchman, is his partner.—A. and N.Z.
