ATHLETIC AND AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
The weather could not possibly havo been better than it was on Saturday; consequently it is not surprising that there was a Aery large attendance at the Kaikohe Returned Soldirs'-Associa-tion's athletic and a-cemen's carnival, which took place in Ngapuha's paddock. A very great deal of work in preparing the grounds had been put in by the energetic committee, with the result that the events were got through with satisfaction to joth competitors and onlookers. » The Kaikohe Brass Band added very greatly to the pleasure of the people and J;he luncheon and afternoon tea booths were well patronised. The officials knew, their work thoroughly, did it efficiently and gave general satisfaction. The , performances of the competitors wero quite up to the average and in some cases very.close finishes resulted from the handicapping. Tho following are the results: —
Maiden Race, 100 yards (6 starters). —H. Atkinson 1, P. Matine 2, J. Mologney 3. This was a very good race indeed, inches separating the placed men. Maiden Chop (standing block, 12 inches), 14 starters—E. J. Grimshaw 1, W. Whui 2, E. O'Neill 3. Handicap Hurclles, 120 yards, 6 starters—E. T. Smith 1, L. V. Amos 2, G. Woods 3. Axemen's Cup (standing block, 15 inches), 9 starters —E. -. Grimshaw (35sec).l, J..Croft (scr) 2. Time, 1.50. 440 Yards Handicap, 6 starters —G. Ferguson (30yds) 1, L. Lloyd (35yds) 2, H. Ferguson (2yds) 3. Single-hand Saw, (15 inch block), 5 starters —J. Amos (4sce) 1, Jack Croft (osec) 2, Jim Croft (scr) 3. This was a fine event from a spectators point of view. Kaikohe Cup (150 yaids handicap), 7 starters—T. Atkinson (6yds) il, C. Thomas (10yds) 2, L. V. Amos (sys) Double-hand Saw (15 inch block), 4 starters —D. Nisbet"and mate (6see) 1, Hay and mate"*(3sec) 2, J. Croft and mate (scr) 3. Nisbet won by a stroker Married Ladies'Rßace —Mrs Moses 1, Mrs Wactfqrd .2."[ " } \. '-.r Single Ladies'Rßace—Miss M.
