River Argus " Company and ',: its manager, James O'Brien, were ~ - charged that by publishing -in the>. • "Argus 'on "August JS an article V~* headed " Blackball Notes" they en- - couraged lawlessness and by so. do- - ' ing the manager incited lawlessness- '' The .article complained of was in/ ". pr,aise of the Russian revolution. • " Mr. O'Brien in his evidence said that the paper-stood always.for cdnaction .as opposed to .violence and quoted leading articles in * " proof.. ' " -. -
The Magistrate said that he would consider the policy of the paper, but held that the article would instil re- , volutionary ideas into its readers.. The writer's use of the word "we" in the latter part, which stated, " As Lenin says, there is only one way for the worker to get possession of the means of production and distribution, and that is to take it,"'was inciting to lawlessness. He accepted Mr. .O'Brien's statement that he" did not write nor read the article before 4ts publication and would convict him and order him to come up for sentence when called on. The company would be conviicted and "fined £25 and costs.
The Magistrate said, that if he knew the writer of the article he, would send him to prison.—Press Assn.
