OLD CUSTOMS DROPPED

THE USUAL INQUEST,

AUCKLAND, This Day,

In connection with the hanging of Gunn the custom of tolling the bell as the condemned man left his cell) and until he was hanged, also that of hoisting the black flag, were dispensed with.

The inquest required toy the Crimes Act was held in the gaol in the afternoon, before Mr Wilson, S.M.. and a jury of four. Evidence was given toy Mr Vincent (gaoler), the sheriff (Mr A. Stutoibs), and the gaol surgeon (Dr. Murray). The jury found that death was due to hanging and that the sentence of the 'Supreme Court had been carried out. —Press Assn.
