IMMIGRATION PROBLEM.
ASIATICS AND OTHERS.
SOLDIERS' CONTENTIONS,
CHRISTCHURCH, June 18
Opposition to the influx of Chinese and Hindus and also of white immigrants w T as expressed by members of a returned soldiers' deputation which waited upon the local committee of members of Parliament.
In amplification of their remit,'' That the satisfactory adjustment of the problem of repatriation shall be a determining factor in deciding an immigration policy and that the general policy of a white New Zealand bo adopted," Mr. W. E. Loadlcy said the spread of Chinese and Hindus in the North Island was very serious. They were competing with returned men in business, and the position would be as bad in twelve months in the South Island as it was in the North Island. "We stand straight out for a white New Zealand," said Mr. Leadley. "The country wants population, but not of that kind. The country should assist tho right kind of population, for instance, lit Imperial soldiers, but our own men should be lirst settled on the
land.''
Mr. E. J. Howard, M.P., said the Government was going to push its immigration policy steadily os soon as the House met. Did the association believe that the local men should be settled first?
"Yes," said Mr. Leadley. "Then should that apply to houses as well?" said Mr. Howard.
"Yes," said Mr. Leadley. "We want soldiers provided wilh houses and land before we start providing for im-
migrants."
"Quite right," said Mr. Howard, "but that menus that you cannot get
immigration."
AUCKLAND, June 18.
The dangers thai would arise from the continued influx of Chinese and Hindus into New Zealand was emphasised in a resolution passed by the Auckland District, Repatriation Board. The board drew the Government's attention to the fact that Asiatics were entering into business competition to the detriment of returned soldiers.
An emphatic protest against the influx of Asiatics has been made by the General Labourers' Union. The protest, will be forwarded to all members of Parliament, and to Parliament itself
during the session
