TRADE COMBINES
OF COLOSSAL PROPORTIONS
(Received 8.50 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. Business syndicates are steadily buying up the Lancashire spinning mills, of which six, involving several millions sterling, were sold yesterday at an average of five times their original capital. A similar tendency towards combination is observable in regard to retail stores, particularly West End drapery firms. Dcbenham's recently absorbed Harvey-Nichols, together with Marshall-Snellgiwe. The new company has a capital of eight millions. Harrod's to-day ])rovisionally arranged to purchase Swarm-Edgar's, in Piccadilly Circus, considered one of the linest'sites in the world. Harrod's and Self ridge's recently acquired some of the largest retail stores in the northern provincial cities.—A. and N.Z.
