OBITUARY.
SIR EDMUND BARTON
A SUDDEN END.
SYDXE\. Jan. 8.
The death is announced of Sir Edmund Barton, first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth.
Sir Edmund Barton's death was dramatically sudden. He had been in indifferent health, and for some time had been recuperating at the Hydro Majestic, Medlow. He went to take a bath, which was always a lengthy process, and no alarm was felt until attempts to open the door failed. An entrance was gained by a window.
It was found that after finishing his bath and dressing in pyjamas he had collapsed behind the door, and died of heart failure. Widespread tributes are paid to him as a great legislator, a pioneer i'ederalionist, and a great lawyer.—A. and N.Z.
