(Received 10.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr Russell in the Senate, promised the closest inquiry into the Nauru Island agreement. The Entertainment Tax Amendment Bill passed in the House of Representatives. A bill providing for preferential voting to elect the Senate passed all its stages. Lord Jellicoe's report states the annual expenditure will vary from four millions during the first year to nearly six millions in the seventh. The jeport recommends better living quarters for the men and states that Lord Jellicoe was struck by the want of system prevailing in the department. BRISBANE, This Day. Mr Hughes, speaking at a welcome, said the Government proposed to pay the soldiers a war gratuity of Is (3d per day in bonds bearing interest at 4jj per cent., not negotiable and not transferable. Special arrangements would be made for redomption in the caso of hardship. The indemnity would be paid before May next and would be used to redeem from 20 to 40 per centof the value of the boads, which, the* would be paid in cash.
