Compared »v : th the methods of bygone years, the present system of penal treatment is almost affection. A question submitted to the Ciovernment in the House of Representatives suggested that a convict, if designated by a softer rame, has an increased chance of reformation. It directed attention to the fact that the Legislature of the ftate of Connecticut has ordered the word "convict" to be deleted from the olHeiol records, and the word "inmate' 'applied to prisoners instead. The Acting Attorney-General refilled that inquiries were being made into the matter.
