HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.
ON GIGANTIC SCALE,
OVERCOMING COAL SHORTAGE,
(Received 8.50 p.m.)
PARIS, Aug. 5
The shortage of coal has turned the attention of scientists to the probabilities of the Rhone's water. The Government has planned a gigantic hydro-electric scheme developing 750 thousand horse-power. The damming of the river will render it navigable for twelve hundred ton vessels to Switzerland and also will provide Virrigteution for fertile tracts.
The scheme will take fifteen years to complete and will cost one hundred millions sterling.—A. and N.Z.
