MAUNGATAPERE.

HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING. The annual meeting of householders held in the Maunu schoolroom on April 28, was rather poorly attended. Either parents are apathetic with respect to matters educational, or they are so well satisfied with the committee that they were prepared to leave 'school matters entirely in the committee's hands, probably the latter, as the old committee were reelected, and at a subsequent meeting of the committee J. H. Hayward was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. Appended is the report for the year 1918 by the chairman, Mr J. H. Hayward : — "I beg - to submit tho annual report for the past year. Under the head- j master, Mr Walker, ably assisted by Miss McLeod, the children have shown satisfactory progress. The inspectors' reports have in every case j been satisfactory, and the general health of the children much better than in the year previous. After much correspondence and a deputation waiting on the Board of Education, the committee at last prevailed upon the board to enlarge the school. We now have a well ventilated, roomy building more in keeping with the requirements of the district. Other improvements in the way of gravelling, cutting out pine trees, etc., have materially added to the comfort of both teachers and children attending *the school. The committee have in hand at present a scheme for the beautifying of the school ground. When brought to completion, the garden and experimental plots they have in prospect ought to be a valuable asset, both from an artistic and practical point of view. I would ask the incoming committee to give this mafrter their first attention. A sum of £6 12s has been collected in the district for the purpose, carrying a subsidy bringing the amount to over £16."
